When purchasing a "Steel String Acoustic Guitar", there are many factors to take into account. The size of the guitar plays a crucial role in both playing comfort and tone quality.

The size of steel string acoustic guitars can be broadly categorized as

  • Large Size

    • Referred to as 41 or 42 inch guitars depending on the guitar's length

    • Also known as Dreadnought and Jumbo guitar.

  • Medium Size

    • Referred to as 38 or 39 inch guitars depending on the guitar's length

    • Also known as Concert, Grand Concert, OM/Orchestra Model and Grand Auditorium guitar. Grand Auditorium is a size in between large size and medium size.

  • Small Size

    • Referred to as 34 inch guitars depending on the guitar's length

    • Also known as Parlor, 3/4, Travel and Mini guitar.


Choosing the correct size of acoustic guitar depends on the following factors

  • A persons stature/height

  • Playing comfort

  • Tone preference


Large Size

Large size guitars are bigger, producing a louder sound and more bass.

A large-sized guitar is suitable for individuals who are approximately 5 feet 7 inches or taller. It should be noted that individuals shorter than 5 feet 7 inches can also use this size, but it may affect playing comfort.

When purchasing a guitar, your budget will play a crucial role. Yamaha, Fender, Ibanez, Gibson, Taylor, Martin, and other reputable brands offer acoustic guitars in different price ranges. Gibson, Taylor, and Martin are considered high-end brands, commanding premium prices for their guitars.

  • Guitar Size: It is advisable to opt for a medium-sized guitar as it offers an ideal combination of playability and tone.
