Self motivation for guitarists

Online Guitar Classes

Motivation

Motivation is what pushes us to achieve our goals and follow our dreams. Motivation can be an “external influence” or “exists within oneself (Self-Motivation)”. Motivation from an external influence maybe short term or long-term depending on individuals.

Self Motivation

“Self-motivation” is strongly driven by an individual’s desire to take action to pursue their dreams without the need for any external influence. Self-motivated people use positive external influences but are not dependent on it. They have a “Never say die” attitude, are positive and enjoy the journey.

Learning the Guitar and Motivation

Motivation, passion etc. are all strong words! The fact is that you need neither of them to learn guitar. You just need the interest and feel-good factor of playing a musical instrument. The interest to learn an instrument will gradually develop into motivation to do better and showcase your skills!

Learning to play an instrument is one of the best ways to break away from monotony of a job or a day to day routine. The effort & time spent will bring in fun, self-satisfaction and many other positives!

Can i learn the guitar? Am i too old to start?

Anybody can learn to play any instrument at any age. Age is an irrelevant factor. The only driving factor is your interest to learn & explore. The fact is many people do not get the opportunity or may not have had the interest to learn music in school or college. They follow their dream once they have a job and the finances to pursue their interests. Learning the guitar is simply developing motor skills, just like learning to type on the keyboard with both Left & Right-hand fingers

Am i talented ?

Every individual is talented & creative, and has a natural instinct towards music. Probably talent is the most misused word in music! Almost all skilled and creative musicians were focused and have put in effort & time to develop their skills. Guitarists are everywhere! Are they all talented? How do you classify talented and not talented?

The only thing that sets apart two individuals playing the guitar is an

  • Individual’s creativity &

  • Skill levels on the guitar

Some individuals learn fast and some slow, but everybody will reach their goals, slow or fast. So, it is important to stay focused and have patience.

Look at the larger picture and keep in mind that the effort and time spent now is going to pay off in the long run irrespective of whether you are learning the guitar as a hobby or for being a professional or other reasons. As you develop the skills on guitar you will find motivational factors in various forms

  • The very decision to learn guitar may have come from some kind of motivation, maybe a song that you liked and the desire to play it on an instrument, watching your friends or someone else play the guitar, or to impress somebody or a passion that has been there for many years but you were unable to pursue it, or other reasons.

  • Set short term goals to keep you motivated, for example in the next 1 month i am going to play a musical piece to a friend or family, or i am going to nail this piece in 2 weeks etc.

  • Surprise your friends and family on special occasions by making a video of you playing a musical piece and send it across in an e-mail or social media. The occasion can be a birthday, Valentine’s Day, festivals or other occasions. A personal touch makes a big difference. You will be motivated to put that extra effort and your friends & family will go the extra mile to support and motivate you

  • Use opportunities in your work place, community events or other venues to perform live.

  • If you are interested in a band, join or form a band once you develop the necessary skills. The fun factor is un-limited and you will be motivated to keep getting better to perform well. There are many semi-pro musicians and bands who balance their profession and music together. Learning the guitar starts off as a hobby and with the desire to perform live on stage with a band, motivation takes over and you work towards this goal.

  • If you are not interested in performing live, it doesn’t matter! Make videos of you playing at home or outdoors among nature, in a beach or beside a campfire! Post it in YouTube and other social media. This is one of the best ways to keep you motivated. It will also help improve your skills as you will work harder to play well and sound good.

  • Be positive and surround yourself with positive people. Avoid negative people. Negative people will always de-motivate you

  • “Just pick up” the guitar and practice, the rest will fall in place. It is as simple as that! So be relaxed, have patience and enjoy the journey.

  • An individual’s circumstance on the personal or professional front may change during the learning process, but it is important to tune your mind and stay focused on your goal!

Formal classes and Motivation

The biggest motivation factor is learning in an organized manner from a music academy. Formal classes automatically bring in focus, a goal-oriented approach and a sense of purpose. As long as you are part of the music academy, short term or long term, you will have motivation in various forms which will help you move ahead and get better.
